During pregnancy, quality rest is essential, but growing a human can make restful sleep tricky.

Pregnancy pillows are designed to support hips, legs, and back, keeping them aligned and pain-free.

Most pregnancy pillows are large, with U, C, or J-shapes that provide localized pressure relief, but some women prefer slimmer-bodied or wedge-shaped pillows.

Experts recommend medium to firm pillows as they provide better support for the head and neck, maintaining healthy body alignment, preventing unnecessary movements, and taking pressure off joints.

So, what are the best pregnancy pillows of 2023?

In this article, I’ll go through some of my favourite pregnancy pillows that I tried out and reviewed for quality sleep and to provide support during your pregnancy.

What are the different shapes and sizes of pregnancy pillows?

Different shapes and sizes of pillows can have varying effects on sleep depending on the areas they cover, such as the head, back, shoulders, and arms.

U-shaped pregnancy pillows

These super-sized pillows are the ultimate pregnancy accessory, providing support from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.

In the later stages of pregnancy, you’ll want a pillow that’s got your back (and front, and sides).

U-shaped pillows offer a contour that hugs your bump just like your favourite pair of stretchy pants.

But if you prefer a more noodle-like design, there are lots of options!

And the best part?

You won’t have to worry about playing pillow Tetris all night because these bad boys are perfect for the frequent flipper.

C-shaped pregnancy pillows

The C-shaped pregnancy pillow is like the U-shaped one but without the extra side.

It’s a space-saving wonder that easily adjusts to your every move.

You’ll get plenty of extended support for your back and belly, but keep in mind that you’ll have to switch it up a bit if you want to alternate between back and belly support.

J-shaped pregnancy pillow

It’s like a candy cane, but way more useful.

With an added curve at the bottom, it’ll give your hips the space they need to support your lower back.

Plus, you can flip it around and use the J’s curve under your head for some top-notch snoozing.

Wedge pregnancy pillow

The little chunk of heaven that provides targeted support where you need it most.

Like a fancy block of cheese, this pillow is small but mighty.

You can tuck it under your bump, lower back, or between your thighs and knees for an extra dose of comfort.

Perfect for those with limited sleeping space or those who just want a little extra love in all the right places.

Now let’s get to the good stuff.

Let’s find out the answer to the question on everyone’s mind – What are the best pregnancy pillows?

#1 The Best Overall – Momcozy U-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow

What I liked/Disliked About The Momcozy U-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow

Liked

  • This gave me great support in all the areas I needed – I especially loved the groves of the pillow. It fit quite snuggly to my body
  • It’s easy to get in and out of
  • I found it handy that I could use it as a nursing pillow as well, it made it 10x easier to breastfeed
  • It was great quality for the money
  • Easy to flip from side to side as both sides offer support
  • The material of the cover was lovely and soft

Disliked

  • The polyester filling didn’t stay as plump as I would have liked it to
  • It was quite large and took up a bit of room on my partner’s side – he ended up sleeping on the edge of the bed

Let’s talk about the Momcozy U-Shaped pregnancy pillow.

I thought it was the Overall best out of the pregnancy pillows I tried… and I tried a few.

It supported my back, belly, and hips as well and got rid of the aches and pains I was experiencing.

This pillow did not disappoint.

The grooves in the pillow offered the perfect amount of cushioning and it fit snuggly to my body.

Plus, it was super easy to get in and out of, which was a game-changer for those middle-of-the-night bathroom runs.

It was easy to make into a nursing pillow.

And if you’re on bed rest it’s also quite handy because you’re able to sit in bed and use it to prop your computer or a book up.

The quality was great for what it cost and the cover material was also super soft to the touch even after a few washes.

The only cons were that the polyester filling didn’t stay as plump as I would have liked and it was quite large and took up some space on my partner’s side.

But overall, I would definitely recommend this pillow to any mom-to-be looking for comfort and support during pregnancy and beyond.

One of my clients also loved it and said it was a total game-changer for her sleep.

#2 The best O-shaped pillow: Bllgrass O-shaped pregnancy pillow

Bllgrass O-shaped pregnancy pillow

What I liked/Disliked About The Bllgrass O-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow

Liked

  • I liked the O-shape because I found that the U-shape often ends up all over the place
  • I found this product easy to use
  • The medium firmness supported my back and relieve pain in my hips and knees
  • It was still large enough to be a full-body pillow but not as large as the other pregnancy pillows out there
  • I loved the cotton filling, It didn’t lose its fluffiness as fast as the other ones. It’s also environmentally friendly and less chemically than the other brands
  • I found that this was one of the more budget-friendly options and the value for money was quite good

Disliked

  • The fact that it’s an O-shape without an opening makes it a little bit harder to get in and out of
  • It’s a bit on the heavy side compared to the other pregnancy pillows I tried

It took me a while to find my favourite o-shaped pillow, but the Bllgrass O-shaped pregnancy pillow definitely stands out from the crowd.

It provided me with much-needed support to relieve pain in my hips and knees.

Its medium firmness made it incredibly comfortable and made me fall asleep almost instantly… but maybe it’s just because I was super tired.

The cotton filling was a great eco-friendly alternative to other brands that are often filled with chemicals and I loved that about this pillow.

However, because cotton is generally heavier than synthetic fillings, this pillow was a bit on the heavy side compared to some of the other options out there.

As a result, it wasn’t as easy to manoeuvre and move around the house.

Also, the O-shape made it a bit tricky to get in and out of at times, especially because I’m not the most graceful person.

Overall, I will definitely recommend the Bllgrass O-shaped pillow to my expectant mummas who are looking for a comfortable and affordable option.

It might take a little getting used to, but once you figure out how to use it, you’ll wonder how you ever slept without it.

#3 The Best C-shape: The CeeCee Pregnancy Pillow by Parmadoc

What I liked/Disliked About The CeeCee Pregnancy Pillow

Liked

  • I had so much choosing a colour because there were so many good ones
  • This pillow was easy to manoeuvre and get in and out of
  • I loved the cotton cover
  • I was able to use it as a nursing pillow when my little one arrived
  • Because it was firmer, it was good for using on the sofa when I was watching tv or reading a book

Disliked

  • It took up quite a lot of room in the bed so even though I was sleeping well, my partner wasn’t
  • It was a bit too firm to sleep with

When it comes to pregnancy pillows, Pharmedoc has some good ones that are often recommended by specialists.

The CeeCee Pillow was comfortable and was one of my favourites to look at (my other favourite is coming up next).

I honestly had such a hard time choosing the colour I wanted, they have a few nice ones.

And who said that your pregnancy pillow can’t be stylish?

The CeeCee pregnancy pillow was filled with synthetic polyester, which I was not a huge fan of but the cotton cover made up for it.

The cotton cover was nice and breathable, which made me less sweaty than the other cushions.

It cradled and supported my body providing relief in my back, hips, and legs, but my neck was unsupported… or maybe I just have a heavy head.

It was a little too soft for my liking, but great to use when I was watching tv, or reading a book on the sofa.

The pillow is quite large, which meant it took up a lot of room in the bed.

Unfortunately, my partner was not a fan of this – he ended up sleeping on the edge of the bed most nights.

This is a good option if you’re looking for something on the softer side.

#4 The Best Adjustable: Bbhugme Adjustable Pregnancy Pillow

What I liked/Disliked About The Bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow

Liked

  • I loved the style and the ability to adjust the firmness of this pregnancy pillow
  • The memory foam was a bit softer and more mouldable than the other pillows
  • It was super easy to adjust and use as a regular pillow for sitting on the sofa or in bed
  • Once my baby was born, I was also able to use it as a nursing pillow which was perfect and super helpful.
  • I loved the colour range
  • It was quite easy to change the shape of the pillow depending on where I wanted to support
  • the cover is made out of cotton which is a lot more breathable than the synthetic covers and better for cooler climates
  • I’m quite tall, this pillow was great because it was long enough for me not to be scrunched up like the other pillows

Disliked

  • It’s a lot more pricy than the other pillows I tried out
  • It didn’t offer back support when I was sleeping so it was easy to roll onto my back without realising

I gotta say, this Bbhugme adjustable pregnancy pillow is definitely one of the snazzier pregnancy pillows on the market.

Not only can you customize the firmness to your liking, but the memory foam is so soft and moldable, it’s like sleeping on a cloud.

And as mentioned earlier – they have COLOURS!

And I’m a sucker for a nice coloured piece to go with my bedding.

And let me tell you, it’s not just for pregnant mamas – I found myself using it as a regular pillow for lounging around the house.

Plus, once my little one arrived, it doubled as a nursing pillow, it was so flexible and easy to form exactly how I wanted it.

The cotton cover was a huge plus too, especially for hot summer nights

However, this one is definitely on the pricier side, but if you’re willing to splurge, it’s worth it.

The only downside was that it didn’t provide much back support, so I found myself accidentally rolling onto my back during the night.

A good choice for those looking for a customizable and versatile pregnancy pillow and for all those tall mummas out there!

#5 The Best Wedge: Oternal Wedge Pregnancy Pillow

Oternal wedge Pregnancy Pillow
Oternal Wedge Pregnancy Pillow

What I liked/Disliked About The Oternal Wedge Pregnancy Pillow

Liked

  • I’m normally a stomach sleeper so I found this helped me stay on my side and stay comfortable
  • This was great for me during the hot nights in summer
  • This pregnancy pillow, I found was lightweight and easy to take around with me
  • I loved that it included a pillow to go between my legs
  • The memory foam gave me good support and didn’t sag as easily as the others
  • I found it handy that I could choose the configuration I wanted

Disliked

  • The Velcro lost its stickiness after a while so I had to keep waking up and reattaching it
  • I had to switch the pillow around when I changed sleeping positions.
  • The cover began to pill after a few washes

I’ll be honest when I first came across the Oternal wedge pregnancy pillow, I thought it looked too small to do anything.

But to my surprise, it was quite supportive.

As a stomach sleeper, I was having a hard time staying on my side while sleeping.

One of the things I loved about this pillow is that it was perfect for those hot summer nights because you’re not wrapped up in some huge pillow.

It’s lightweight and easy to take with me on holiday or just moving around the house.

I really loved that despite it being super minimal, it still came with a pillow to go between my legs, which made a huge difference for my sciatica.

The memory foam gave me great support and didn’t sag or lose its shape like some of the other pillows I tried.

And I loved that I could choose the configuration that worked best for me.

When I needed to prop up my back I used the U-shape and when I needed support for my belly, I used the H-shape.

This pillow covered all the bases.

But, of course, there were some things I didn’t like.

The Velcro did lose its stickiness after a while, so I had to keep waking up and reattaching it.

I found that I had to switch the pillow around when I changed sleeping positions, which was a bit of a hassle.

And the cover began to pill after a few washes, which was a bit disappointing.

But, If you’re a mum who’s always on the move or looking for something that’s not going to take up a lot of space in the bed, this is my recommended pregnancy pillow.

It’s definitely going to be used next time I travel.
